Sheffield to Huddersfield
From Pedalpushers
In progress ...
Continues from the Sheffield and Hunters Bar to Oughtibridge routes.
North of Oughtibridge there is only one viable road option, the A6102. At the time of writing this is not too bad, mainly due to the road closure south of Oughtibridge. This situation may change when the road re-opens.
An off-road alternative is the Trans-Pennine Trail. Take Station Lane (Steep hill) until you see the signs. The trail takes forest tracks and can be slow going on a road bike. It does however take you through Wharncliffe Woods, a popular mountain biking spot. If you are happy with this kind of route, you can continue to Dunford Bridge, mostly on rail trail, where you can turn right and take a minor road over to Holmfirth.
If you are on the Hunters Bars to Oughtibridge route, you can turn left at Malin Bridge for the B6077, a stiff climb to High Bradfield then on to the Ewden Valley coming out at Bolsterstone and continuing to Langsett. The disadvantage of this highly scenic route is that you lose all the height you have gained coming out of Ewden. That is why, if you are on a utility trip, we recommend using the route below.
Continue on the A6102 until you reach Deepcar. Turn left on the B6088 through Stocksbridge. Just before the river bridge at the NW end of town, turn left and go around Underbank reservoir on the west side. When you come to an unmarked triangular road junction turn right. (Oaks Lane). Go r. Mortimer Lane, then l. Chapel Lane to Midhop Lane which will bring you out at Langsett.
Do stop at Langsett Cafe - a youngish guy has taken it over and is trying to start a bike hire business as well.
Unfortunately you cannot now avoid a short stretch on the very busy A616 up to the Flouch - take extreme care. After the Flouch the road gets quieter. From there it's over the top past Hepworth and down into the Holme valley. The long valleys on the approach to Huddersfield make for great cycling, high speeds are indicated. On a good quality road bike it doesn't take much longer to cycle to Huddersfield than it does to get the train!
For refreshment in Huddersfield the "Head of Steam" at the station is recommended.
