Meadowhead to Chesterfield

From Norton Lane one option is to take Jordanthorpe Parkway round to the Bowshaw roundabout, thus avoiding The Meadowhead Squareabout and the busy bit of dual carriageway. From Bowshaw which has an inadequate cycle facility, go through Dronfield & Unstone on the B6057. Turn left just before the A61 bridge, to Whittington (James cycle shop) you can use the subways here to cross the A61, and continue along Sheffield Rd (cycle lanes) to the town centre.

However, the Sheffield Road cycle lanes are usually parked solid & require the rider to tackle a roundabout at the bottom of Peveril Road. There are 2 alternatives, either use the underpass off the Whittington Moor roundabout to enable a 1st left onto the A61 bypass, then 1 stop down on the hard shoulder to access the canal towpath at Lockoford Lane, or take the Brimington road from the roundabout, which gets to the canal at Wheeldon Mill. Leave the canal just after the path changes sides over a little brick arch, & go into town along Brimington Road, which comes out by the railway station. It's a flat straight line bar the short climb from the canal to the road. T'other route has 2 hills on it & a lot more traffic.

Another way to get to Chesterfield is via the Trans-Pennine Trail leisure route - only viable as a commuting route if you live well to the east of Sheffield, however.

Link to Dore:

Here are some suggestions for getting to Dore when travelling in the Chesterfield - Sheffield direction.

At Meadowhead suggest turn left onto Greenhill Parkway then immediately right to Greenhill Ave then Bocking Lane, left to Abbey Lane and at the bottom you are at Abbeydale Rd not far from Dore Station. On this last section there are traffic islands which reduce the width of the road, and we recommend taking the centre of the road when passing these, so that traffic cannot attempt to squeeze past you dangerously.

That would be the quickest reasonably quiet route but you might like to explore going via Lowedges Rd (turning off A61 before Meadowhead, left to Greenhill Parkway, right to Bradway Rd, and left down Abbey drive which is a bridleway with a reasonable surface, very pleasant and brings you out at the bottom of Abbey Lane. This might make more sense on the return journey.
